Stella Maris - Star of the Sea
Located underwater at the Coogee Beach Dive Trail, North Coogee, WA. Near the Omeo shipwreck.
Named after Mother Mary, the Star of the Sea. Stella Maris is a guardian of the ocean and a tribute to the seafarers she has long protected. This giant underwater starfish sculpture is both an artwork and an experience.
Stella Maris weighs nearly 19 tonnes and is crafted using a steel frame overlaid with Concrete Canvas (a flexible fabric impregnated with concrete ).
The starfish sculpture includes a swim-through tunnel designed for snorkellers and divers to enjoy. Blow bubbles on the way through and watch them rise through the top of the sculpture on the way out! The starfish acts as an artificial reef, providing a safe haven for a growing community of marine life.
Stella Maris continues to evolve. The sea itself becomes the artist, as coral, algae, and fish slowly transform the surface. Every dive is different — a living artwork in progress, shaped by nature’s own hand.
Tip: For the best visibility, dive on a calm summer morning with offshore winds. Look for the blue and yellow marker on the rocks to find your entry point. Happy exploring!
Concrete Canvas consists of a 3-dimensional fibre matrix containing a specially formulated dry cementitious mix. Once set, the fibres reinforce the cementitious mix. As a result, CC provides a thin, durable, waterproof and lower-carbon alternative to traditional concrete. Here is the link if you would like to know more. Concrete Canvas | Concrete Canvas®
