Stella the Stingray is an underwater sculpture installed at Busselton Jetty in May 2023. The inspiration for Stella the Stingray comes from youthful memories of swimming alongside stingrays. These majestic creatures, with their barbed tails, glide through the water with effortless grace, resembling flight.
Fabricated from over 1500 steel pipes of various dimensions, ranging from 27mm to 140mm in diameter and cut between 100mm to 600mm in height, it creates perfect hidey holes for marine species, coral, and sponges. By encouraging coral propagation within the pipework and crevices, Stella becomes a thriving artificial reef, enhancing biodiversity, promoting marine life growth and supporting ocean health.
As marine organisms settle and flourish, Stella will transform into a vibrant ecosystem, offering divers and snorkellers a magical interactive experience while supporting the health of Busselton Jetty’s marine environment.
